Wintersong – Sarah McLachlanView More By Sarah McLachlan Our ReviewWintersong is a perfect stocking stuffer just about anyone who digs good music but is tired of hearing those same old Christmas carols every year. McLachlan includes a few standard numbers here like “Silent Night” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and turns the former into a big, gorgeous, roomy hymn of Cowboy Junkies or Jonatha Brooke proportions with cascading layers of gossamer vocal harmonies, while the latter plays with a stark beauty similar to what Cocteau Twins did with their 1993 Holiday themed EP Snow. McLachlan keeps close to John Lennon’s blueprint with an opening rendition of his “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” while transforming Gordon Lightfoot’s “Song for a Winter’s Night” into a beauteous ballad blending equal parts dream-pop, contemporary folk and adult-alternative to record what could be the prettiest song here. The album’s title-track proves to be the only original McLachlan song, but with its pensive narrative and moody feel, it fits perfectly among the other selections.. Customer ReviewsOriginal interpretations are a nice change (4 stars)I've really enjoyed this album for it's original renditions of often heard songs. I would particularly recommend In a Bleak Mid Winter as maybe the most contemplative Christmas piece I own. I often imagine being at a midnight Christmas service lit only with candlelight, or being in a snowy meadow with only moonlight. I highly recommend her rendition of that hymn if you like those sorts of pieces. An Amazing Album (5 stars) This is an exceptional christmas album. Sarah McLachlan has a beautiful voice and her album features songs that display her talents excellently. Her song 'River' is an extraordinary song that I would recommend to anyone. Wintersong is a wonderful addition to my collection of holiday albums! Great Album (5 stars) Sarah puts a nice twist on traditional christmas music, making an album that you could listen to anytime. The best song on the album is River. Her haunting voice suits the songs perfectly.
