The followup to the mega-platinum Born in the U.S.A., Tunnel of Love, is a brilliant, bittersweet meditation on love and life in the shadow of success. Springsteen had spent the previous years touring and basking in the adoration of fans worldwide, only to come home to face his own identity crisis. It begins a cappella with a rockabilly kick in "Ain't Got You." From there, the music slowly opens up,minimally arranged, with bandmates brought in as needed. There is none of the furious rock n' roll punch of his most popular work. Instead, keyboards and acoustic guitars usher in somber tones as Springsteenr eflects: "Tougher Than the Rest," "Cautious Man," "Walk Like A Man." Each tune is imbued with a foreboding sense that all is not right. The dark clouds surrounding this album alongside Springsteen's unflinching and honest insights make this one of his most underrated and rewarding albums.

The Struggle of Love (4 stars)
One of the things that makes the music of Bruce Springsteen appealing is that it is very personal. A couple of years into his first marriage, Bruce produced "Tunnel of Love". This is an album about the struggle to make a relationship work. How faith and temptation battle within the soul of a man. Bruce's most misunderstood and moody album. It's great! (5 stars)
Many Springsteen fans hated Tunnel of Love when it came out in 1987, and I include myself in that group--at first. I was such a big fan that I just kept listening to it, and then, one day, after perhaps the 20th listen, the album started to move me in the right way and I finally fell in love with it. It's a quiet, beautiful album, and it's also got an E-Street-style rocker called Spare Parts that is one of Bruce's best. Of course, Tunnel

Hauntingly Superb (5 stars)
By far and away one of the most personal albums ever penned by The Boss, and as a result, maybe his best, along with Born To Run. Although not as commercially successful as others, I believe that among those of the fringe of being a Springsteen loyalist, this album is like a fine wine, growing more respected and valuable over time.
