Our Review

Dismissed almost immediately on release as a failed attempt to match Sgt. Peppers, for those with open ears and open minds, this has always been a terrific, if anomalously blues-free album, full of surprising turns and rewarding experiments in sound and imagery — as trippily luring as the lenticular 3D cover that graced the original LP. The sinister title is realized in the dark garage-rock psychedelia of "Citadel," "The Lantern," and especially the bleak space stranding of "2000 Light Years from Home," balanced by the unexpected utopian prologue of opener "Sing This All Together" (the chant and percussion core perhaps reflecting Brian Jones' stays in Morocco) and the gorgeous baroque-pop of "She's a Rainbow" (centered on Nicky Hopkins' piano). Even Bill Wyman's debut as a writer and singer on "In Another Land," drenched in opium-esque haze, fits the mood perfectly. Heck, even the indulgent jam "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" is a legitimate period piece.

Unjustly Underrated (4 stars)
The Stones' 1967 psychedlic effort is truly an original masterpiece. At times it can get to be a little unbearable ("Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" (long version), "Gomper"), but most is very interesting. From the piano-laden "She's a Rainbow" to the space-rock od "2000 Light Years From Home," this album surely deserves a spot in the library of even casual Stones fans.

Great Album... open your minds (5 stars)
I am not a Stones fan by any means... however this album is played constantly at home. The melodies are top notch and never get old. Certainly the band took huge chances in the studio with an album like this, and it pays off. Lastly, comparing this to Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is way off the mark... this album has gritty hooks and none of the trivial pop that makes up SPLHCB... take a chance, open your minds and buy this album.

SMR (4 stars)
its not a bad album, its just a dfferent genre of the stones that not to many people have heard. if i remeber correctly this was supposed to be a shot at the beatles sgt pepper. many people will tell you this is an aweful album, but i beg to differ. She's a Rainbow is a fantastic song so is 2000 light years for home, sing this all together is also pretty good its more in the experimental side of the music, i like that "crap" as do

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
