Subset of "Message in a Box" (4 stars)
I'm a huge fan of The Police, so this release is a bit lacking. If you want to glean the great talent of the group, this is the best place to start but it would be best to buy "Message in a Box" - the full version, not available on iTunes - which includes every song released by The Police and a few live and unreleased tunes - for example, "Dead End Job" is a great little rocker missing from this release.

The Police...absolutely legendary - and this list of songs is a nice tribute, albeit incomplete. However, the store-bought box set is better. Why? Because you get more cuts for less money. Someone else mentioned getting it at Target for a few dollars less than on iTunes (with a few more songs)...and at Wal-Mart it's on sale for even less than it is at Target. A decent anthology of the Police. Predictable song selection. It's nice having "Fall Out" in the song line up. Sounds are pristine on this CD edition, better than the "Message in a Box" set from the 90's With another 38 minutes of playing time available between the two discs, why stop at 28 songs? How about additional key album tracks? Some B sides or live recordings?" Don't Stand '86" ? Alternate takes?

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense, interlocking waves of sounds and effects. Stewart Copeland could play polyrhythms effortlessly. And Sting, with his high, keening voice, was capable of constructing...
