The Essential Willie Nelson – Willie NelsonView More By Willie Nelson Our ReviewWillie Nelson's signature tunes are well known (“Always on My Mind,” “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “On the Road Again,” “Crazy”), his vocal phrasings unmistakable (“Georgia On My Mind,” “The Party’s Over”), and even in his most earnest longings, he finds sad truths and moments of humor (“Hello Walls”). Though he didn’t become a huge star until the 1970s, as part of the Outlaw Country movement, Nelson was a songwriting and performing veteran whose unorthodox lifestyle and approach to the music business left conservative Nashville uncertain how to accept him, even as he racked up a notable catalog of brilliant material. Time and continued success has rectified these oversights and now Nelson has enjoyed seeing his long, twisted career unraveled in a number of worthy collections that span the different labels he wrote and recorded for. This 2003 collection is a solid entry, featuring every aspect of the man’s influence and career, allowing for his excellent taste in covers (Lefty Frizzell’s “If You’ve Got the Money, I’ve Got the Time),” Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” Townes Van Zandt’s “Pancho and Lefty”), his own exemplary tunes, and even an unusual collaboration with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler (“One Time Too Many”).. Customer ReviewsMReedBMWM3 (5 stars)Prior to this album I had never been a Willie fan. Now I believe he is an absolute legend. The entire album is an excellent relaxing, fun, trip. the old days... (4 stars) I don't like country music but Willie Nelson has a voice that sounds like someone you know, an old friend, or someone who could be in your family. His music is so authentically American. Who sings with him on Mammas don't let you babies grow up to be cowboys though? I miss the old days when you could see who was singing on the album, who wrote the song, all the words, who cleaned the studio, who catered, etc. The Essential Willie Nelson (4 stars) Some of these tracks can ONLY be sung by Willie! Blue Skies,Georgia.....this album is a must own. Although he didn't become a star until the mid-'70s, Nelson spent the '60s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price ("Night Life"), Patsy Cline ("Crazy"), Faron Young ("Hello Walls"), and Billy Walker ("Funny How Time Slips Away") as well as releasing a series of records on Liberty and RCA that earned him a small, but devoted, cult following.
