Our Review

Nirvana opened the door and Pearl Jam walked right in. Eighties nerf-metal had finally run its course and in its place came a tougher, socially conscious breed of band. But where Nirvana represented the thornier aspects of punk rock, Pearl Jam embraced the musical traditions of classic guitar rock. Mike McCready's Hendrix-Clapton influenced solos can be heard squeaking out of the material ("Even Flow"), while Eddie Vedder had the Bono-esque pomp and circumstance that immediately fit the arenas and festivals where the band would soon perform. Though the group's core was formed with the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam hadn't been together long when it recorded this debut album. Yet, Ten is a confident, fully realized collection of songs dealing with a wide range of subjects from school violence ("Jeremy") to difficult family relationships ("Release"). It spawned several huge hits ("Alive," "Even Flow," "Jeremy") and contains the group's live favorite "Black," an emotionally charged brooder that helped define the group as 'spokesmen' for their rapidly dissatisfied Generation X audience.

This is BIG - the remixes are frickin solid! (5 stars)
Don't get me wrong, there was almost absolutely *nothing* WRONG with the original Ten when it came out in 1991. It was monumental. It rocked my adolescent world. But face it, there were babies born that year that are now going to college... Things were different then. For example, there was Grunge then, and Ten (in my book) defined that sound. (OK, there was Nevermind which was in my book equally masterful, and then those other Seattle bands

Buy the real version (1 star)
The New Years tracks are from the Fan Club edition of the band's self-tited album. You can find that whole show online pretty easy. Those tracks are NOT iTunes exclusives. Buy the physical version, the packaging is amazing.

My joy was replaced by overwhelming excitement (5 stars)
I see Itunes has added four songs from New Years '92. Dont buy it here though. Go buy the super deluxe edition and bask in its glory. Recommended for jammers only.

Biography

Formed: 1990 in Seattle, WA
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After Mother Love Bone's vocalist, Andrew Wood, overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. Thanks to future Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, the demo found its way to a 25-year-old San Diego surfer named Eddie Vedder, who overdubbed...
