Songs of Faith and Devotion (Remastered 2006) [With Bonus Video] – Depeche ModeView More By Depeche Mode Our ReviewDavid Gahan must have gotten sick of answering the same questions around Songs of Faith and Devotion's release — variations of "no really, how are you going to top Violator?" and "what's with the leather and the long hair, dude? We get it: You're kinda gothy, kinda rocky now, right down to the rehiring of Nitzer Ebb/Nine Inch Nails producer Flood on your new record. But why?" To which Gahan could have simply replied, "Did you sing on a little song called 'Personal Jesus?' I didn't think so." As for a direct answer to the Violator question, none of Depeche Mode's new singles was as huge or hooky as "Enjoy the Silence" or that "Jesus" song. But that was to be expected. At least they were a fitting follow-up, a soulful, shadowy collection of songs that strut and stomp ("I Feel You"), crawl and creep ("In Your Room"), and ... bring to mind the movie Braveheart ("Judas")? Yep. This one is a strange, satisfying beast, for sure, made all the moodier by a recent remastering treatment, atmospheric and jazzy remixes, and a bonus documentary fittingly subtitled "We were going to live together, record together... and it was going to be wonderful..." Good thing one man's misery is a nice addition to another man's album collection.. Customer ReviewsDepeche Mode's last GREAT album (5 stars)While Playing the Angel was good, and surprising, Songs of Faith and Devotion is Depeche Mode's last truly great album. Laying the technological groundwork for the next decade-and-a-half of crossover electronic music Alan Wilder and Flood pioneered the use of sampling and computer manipulation with performed passages which would be aped by everyone from Tori Amos to Linkin Park. Martin Gore is at the absolute peak of his songwriting ability DM's best (5 stars) While Violator may have been DM's breakout album, it is dificult to listen to from beginning to end. This album is a solid listen, front to back. If you don't have it, buy it. I would recommend Violator first and if you like that you will like this cd even more. Depeche Mode's "grunge-era" classic (5 stars) Depeche Mode took their sound to the next logical step with the very organic and rock-ish "Songs of Faith and Devotion". From the beginning up to the end the album is full of good songs, and the additional tracks in the remastered version highlight some of the bands better remixes during the 90's. "One Caress", "Higher Love", "Walking in My Shoes", "Mercy in You", and "I Feel You are t BiographyFormed: 1980 in Basildon, Essex, EnglandGenre: Pop Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more...
