View More By James Brown Our ReviewJames Brown Live at Home was an early idea for this double album's title; never mind that half of it was actually cut at King Records in Cincinnati. That includes the completely rethought version of "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" that was one of the building blocks of early hip-hop, as well as a deceptively relaxed version of the title song. The stuff that was recorded in Augusta, G-A is nearly as enticing, including sizzling takes on recent singles such as "Licking Stick - Licking Stick" and "There Was a Time." (The latter sits beside a version of the musical-theater staple "If I Ruled the World," which Brown infuses with soul power.) A couple of instrumentals, "Lowdown Popcorn" (another studio track) and a jazz-tavern remake of Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Spinning Wheel," even demonstrate the Bootsy-era J.B.s' ability to smolder instead of smoke.. You have never heard the God Father of Soul hit his high notes like this. A live performance that covers all of his basics and then some. The songs are not as rushed as they are in many of his live albums and the sound quality is excellent. A perfect display of pure emotion for the home crowd. The Godfather of Soul (5 stars) Lord bless and keep your child, James Brown, now that he has passed on to your arms. James, you're musical genius inspired a generation of artists, and you will live on in the music of all those who were inspired by your incredible spirit and humanity.
