Naming its album Pop and introducing exciting new sonics that weren’t necessarily as “rock” as its old touchstones announced a band looking to break past the preconceived notions that even Achtung Baby! and Zooropa had blown apart. Yet, in the end, no matter how shiny and amazing the production — and no one gets a more intense sound than Flood — the band always boils down to the quartet at its core. Dave “The Edge” Evans brings his arsenal of tones and riffs, Bono screams to the heavens, and the rhythm section locks into the tightest of grooves. “Discotheque” may head onto the dancefloor with one hand waving frenetically, but it’s still rock n’ roll to anyone for whom it concerns. “Staring at the Sun,” “Mofo,” and “Do You Feel Loved” are every bit as powerful as the better-known anthems in the band’s catalog and no amount of studio sizzle can remove the heart.. No, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's worth trying out. Any U2 fan should have it, of course. But even if you're not a U2 fan - try it out. It's a lot different than the U2 you hear on the radio. It's definitely U2's darkest album, but it's also probably their most rocking (along with Achtung Baby). The techno elements work well, but it Better than anything they've done in the 2000's. (5 stars) This album was unfairly recieved due to its experimental nature and having sounded like nothing else U2 has done. Pop is actually a great album, it isnt techno, its more or less ahead of its time. Mofo boasts a guitar that sounds like an airplane, Discotheque is addicting and catchy, and Please with pulsating backround rhythm. The whole album is strong, although it certainly isn't an easy listen. It takes a few spins to grow on you, but its Unfairly Dissed (4 stars) I first listened to Pop knowing full well that it was "the mistake", the album that ended U2 Mach II much in the same way that Rattle and Hum ended Mach I. That said, I found it to be a very underrated work which can easily stand it's own against the rest of the U2 catalog.
