Mutations – BeckView More By Beck Our ReviewWorking with producer Nigel Godrich, who’s manned the controls for Radiohead, Beck Hansen followed up the Grammy-winning Odelay with an album that defied expectations and was at first greeted more as a “side project” than a serious follow-up. But time and perspective have shown that attempts to pigeonhole Beck to any one style are futile, and to always expect the unexpected. Mutations is considerably lower-key than the eclectic whirlwind of Odelay, but it’s hardly lo-fi. Country, folk, bossa nova, and psychedelia all make their genres felt, but always filtered through Beck’s own personal vision. “Cancelled Check” features tinkling pianos and pedal steel, but no one in Nashville would confuse Beck with one of their own. “Bottle of Blues” sounds like Beck’s been visiting the Mississippi Delta with the Kinks’ Ray Davies in tow. “Tropicalia” adds Brazilian rhythms without losing its slacker roots. By relying on his touring band and not an onslaught of samples, Beck’s sound is modest, and informal in spots. “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” features sitar and a string arrangement from his dad. Even subdued, Beck keeps his ambitions up. Customer ReviewsOne of the most under rated songwriters of our time (5 stars)This album is so spectacular, for the past two days all I have been doing is listening to it over and over and over again. It doesn't get old, and the review above is right, with each listen new characteristics to each song are revealed. I love the bluesy feel that he adds with songs like 'canceled check' and 'bottle of blues' and 'dead melodies' then some other songs Beck displays his true singing power in songs like 'Nobody's Fault But My THE most underrated Beck Album (5 stars) As textured and full as any Beck offering. I love every album he does but this is up at the top for me. Where's this cd in the essentials? (5 stars) I was just looking through i-tunes essentials of beck, and not a single song from this is on it. What's up with that I-tunes? They have a song with jay-z and pharrell, but not this. BiographyBorn: July 08, 1970 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Alternative Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Initially pegged as something as a voice of a generation when “Loser” turned into a smash crossover success, Beck did wind up crystallizing much of the post-modern ruckus of the ‘90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manners of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash-rock, pop, soul, lounge music…pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate, blurring boundaries and encapsulating how...
