Memphis Blues – Cyndi LauperView More By Cyndi Lauper Our ReviewWhen Cyndi Lauper first emerged on the pop scene in the early ‘80s, it was assumed that she would have a long, fruitful career in the public eye. Well, she’s had the fruitful career, but the public has kept only one eye open. Her large cult embraces her and allows her the chance to try anything, and she’s proved over the years that she can sing anything. Here is her take on the blues. Joined by Allen Toussaint, B.B. King, Ann Peebles, Charlie Musselwhite and Johnny Lang, Lauper works her way through an excellent repertoire of blues classics from Little Walter Jacobs’ “Just Your Fool” and Lowell Fulson’s “Shattered Dreams,” where she tears it up with vocal jumps surely the envy of any singer, to Bobby Blue Bland’s “Don’t Cry No More” and even Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads.” It’s a stunning collection. Ann Peebles challenges her at the mic for Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin’.” It’s the kind of competition that brings out the fire in both of them.. Customer ReviewsSo much better than I thought! Awesome! (5 stars)I'm so impressed with these songs. First, let's notice that Lauper is joined by many blues legends on this cd. So,it really has no choice but to be wonderful. I am a fan of her voice and she hasn't sang like this in many many albums. It is great to hear her do what she does best on this collection. That said... if you're reading this, than you should probably buy it. My personal two favorites currently are Romance in the Dark and Rollin' a Some incredible tracks (5 stars) Although Cyndi's incredible vocal range is not always showcased on Memphis Blues, the songs are absolutely worthwhile and there are some real standouts where she lets her voice burst out with it highs and gravelly lows, including Romance in the Dark and Down So Low. It's a shame that many have not paid attention to her incredible efforts since the 80s including Hat Full of Stars, Sisters of Avalon and Shine, but I am glad to see that she ha Mind Blowing (5 stars) I have to be perfectly clear, I was not expecting to enjoy this disk! But there is something crazy unusually cool about Memphis Blues. It is a big risk for Lauper to go and record this record, have people think that she has the right to sings these songs. Many people will probably be very harsh on this album. But as I sit and listen to the old school horns and piano and guitar strums mixed with Lauper's voice- something magical takes ove BiographyBorn: June 22, 1953 in Brooklyn, NYGenre: Pop Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early '80s, which helped lead her not only to the top of the charts, but also to stardom. Throughout America, there were...
