Kala (Bonus Track Version) – M.I.A.View More By M.I.A. Our ReviewM.I.A.’s debut Arular, with its roaring electro and outspoken calls to third world unity, stood out as one of the most critically polarizing and creatively bracing releases of 2005. For her followup M.I.A. has largely adhered to the chaotic template that originally brought her fame. Standout track “Paper Planes” comes off like a ragga-tinged schoolyard chant perforated by gunfire, while the frenetic stomp of lead single “Boyz” would sound right at home next to any Timbaland helmed club anthem. Indeed Timbaland’s world-spanning sonic aesthetic is clearly a touchstone for M.I.A., yet her beats are touched with an air of pseudo-militant righteousness and barely restrained dissonance sure to appeal to fanciers of the pop avant-garde. Critical beard pulling aside, Kala, stands out as an album full of a sense of undeniable energy missing from most modern club music. When M.I.A. growls “I’m knocking on the doors of your Hummer, Hummer” she clearly wants to be seen as a carjacker in the throes of a dangerous political awakening. Though this may be something of a fantasy, the unhinged roar of Kala is full of truly frightening and joyously enervating sounds, and deserves to be heard by adventurous listeners.. (5 stars) For all the people rating this album with one star because its "garbage" and they say "what has music come to?" they clearly have NOT listened to the album. Not only does the album have mastermind production, beats, featured artists, and just generally amazing songs in general--the songs MEAN SOMETHING! A lot of these songs shed light on the injusticies in the world including problems in 3rd world countries (Hussel, 20 Do Sophomore Splendor (5 stars) I haven't been this anxious to listen to a particular artist's sophomore album in a long time. Her first album floored me with originality, style, power, personality, honesty, and sexuality all over infectious electronic beats, rythyms and vocals. This album has a slight change of style, it seems more mature and produced. However, it still screams M.I.A. and I'm glad she didn't sell out and get her album fully produced by Timbaland (No offen BiographyBorn: July 17, 1977 in Hounslow, EnglandGenre: Electronic Years Active: '00s, '10s If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about M.I.A. became. Arular, M.I.A.'s first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing...
