This album is Mastered for iTunes. Bon Iver’s evocative, deeply personal music finds added resonance in these seven iTunes Session tracks. Recording live at East West Studios, band mastermind Justin Vernon enlists a top-notch back up combo to help him bring out new shadings and subtleties in his tunes. The result feels like a classic jazz recording date, enabling Vernon to bring his complex compositions to life with real-time intensity. The band concentrates on material from Bon Iver’s self-titled sophomore album, with “Michicant,” “Holocene” and “Hinnon, TX” standing out for their luminous, melancholy beauty. “Beth/Rest” especially is worth hearing for its expansive arrangement and hypnotic sax/guitar/piano interplay. Vernon compliments his own songs with a jazzy cover of Bjork’s “Who Is It?,” built around a slippery groove and languid, wistful horns. Taken together, the tracks offer a taste of Bon Iver’s billowing live sound while whetting the appetite for Vernon’s next full-fledged studio project.

Justin Vernon and company just keep making musical magic with everything they touch. These renditions are just as good as the album originals, and dare I say some might even be better. Thank you guys for making music that is nothing short of an honor to listen to.

By the way, Wash. is probably my all time favorite. Just so unbelievably gorgeous.

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips.
