In The Wee Small Hours – Frank SinatraView More By Frank Sinatra Our ReviewPicking up the thread he'd begun on the 10-inch Songs For Young Lovers a year earlier, Frank Sinatra's first 12-inch LP used the then-new format to expand his ambitions considerably on this 1955 release. The result was arguably the first full-length pop music concept album, an instant classic later enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The singer's blossoming collaboration with arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle produced a moody, introspective masterpiece, one whose arrangements for small ensemble and occasional brooding strings were informed by a jazz sensibility as mature as its themes of heartbreak and romantic despair (a mood often attributed to Sinatra's failed romance with Ava Gardner). Many of the songs were already familiar standards at the time the album was recorded, but Sinatra and Riddle elevate them into a whole new realm — and as compelling an argument as any for the musical adage the singer, not the song.. In a professional career that lasted 60 years, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his appeal and pursue his musical goals despite often countervailing trends. He came to the fore during the swing era of the 1930s and '40s, helped to define the "sing era" of the '40s and '50s, and continued to attract listeners during...
