Our Review

Alan Jackson’s 1993 album Honky Tonk Christmas succeeds by avoiding holiday clichés. For starters there is only one traditional song here, and though “Holly Jolly Christmas” is perfectly pleasant, it is the most boring thing about the album. Rather than simply add some twang to the same old holiday songs, Jackson puts a Christmas twist on the classic country themes of breakups (“Honky Tonk Christmas”), loneliness (“If You Don’t Want To See Santa Claus Cry”), and drinking (the peppy but surprisingly dark “Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas)”). A Merle Haggard cover (“If We Make It Through December”) proves that even when he’s making a Christmas album, Jackson is country to the core. Because it is not strictly focused on the tropes of holiday music, Honky Tonk Christmas ends up being an album that works at any time of year. Even though it radiates the warmth of the holiday season, Jackson’s duet with Alison Krauss (“The Angels Cried”) is one of the most sublime ballads of either singer’s career.

So good, The Decembrists made a cover of one of the songs. (5 stars)
I love the CD, but I was surprised to see that the Decembrists made a cover of "Please Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)." Both Alan Jackson's and The Decembrists sound great. This album (Alan Jackson's) is an awesome album. I love his version of "Holly Jolly Christmas." It still makes me feel cozy.

Best of the Rest (5 stars)
Whenever I listen to this album, I always know it's Christmas. It has a quality that warms your heart and makes you think of family, friends, and home. My favorite track is "Santa's Gonna Come in a Pickup Truck" with Alvin and the Chipmuncks, just because it's so hilarious. This album has been a family favorite since before I was even born. If you ever buy a christmas album, this is THE one to get. You wont regret your purchase. Ju

After Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson was the most popular male country singer of the '90s. An heir to the new traditionalist movement of the '80s, Jackson's approach was rooted in classic honky tonk yet remained comfortably within the contemporary mainstream. Jackson's hallmark was consistency — he wrote many of his own hits, and his way with a hook was part of the reason he never really hit a commercial dry spell, even into the new millennium. He also projected a modest, wholesome, down-to-earth...
