Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook – Ella FitzgeraldView More By Ella Fitzgerald Our ReviewIt’s hardly a surprise that Ella Fitzgerald’s mid-50’s signing to the Verve label yielded such immediate, spectacular results: manager Norman Granz had built the imprint largely around her after dissatisfaction with the results from her long tenure at Decca. The successful multi-composer Songbook cycle that resulted contain some of the most elegant and satisfying recordings of her career. This 1956 tribute to Cole Porter launched both the series and the label, a project that saw Fitzgerald subdue her bristling bop jazz instincts somewhat in service of young arranger/conductor Buddy Bregman’s orchestral showcases of Porter’s epochal catalog, ranging from a lounge-spare “I Get a Kick Out of You” and the straightforward swing of “What is This Thing Called Love” to a rollicking “It’s De-Lovely and a suitably lush “Night and Day.” The Library of Congress eventually afforded the release one of its highest honors, inducting it into the National Recording Registry in 2003.. Customer ReviewsNobody Does It Better Than Ella (5 stars)This CD is absolutely phenomenal! It has lots of songs on it, all of which are very good, but several of which stick out at you right when you hear them, including the famous "Night and Day" and "I Get a Kick Out of You." I have yet to hear a recording of either of those two songs done better than what you will hear if you download them from this album, which I highly advise you to. Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book (5 stars) I originally downloaded this album because I was looking for appropriate music for my wedding video. Cole Porter wrote some beautiful and romantic standards that I knew would be perfect. I can't say enough about how wonderful this album is. Ella Fitzgerald had one of the most extraordinary voices ever recorded. Her interpretations are truly amazing and heartfelt. The musical arrangements are also extremely well done and you get a few di Classic (5 stars) I was a young man when I first heard this as a double LP back in the early 80's. I ran to the Coop and bought the album. It got better with each play. What an introduction to both Ella Fitzgerald and Cole Porter. I believe this collection is a must have for anyone who is not familiar or does not own any Ella. I bought it and I have a lot of her on vinyl, and disc. Simply, an amazing album. BiographyBorn: April 25, 1917 in Newport News, VAGenre: Jazz Years Active: '30s, '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
