Ella and Louis – Ella FitzgeraldView More By Ella Fitzgerald Our ReviewThis album is Mastered for iTunes. If Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is the essential instrumental jazz album, its vocal equivalent may be Ella and Louis. The entire Hall of Fame roster alone is astounding—vocalist Ella Fitzgerald and trumpeter/vocalist Louis Armstrong, plus pianist Oscar Peterson’s Nat King Cole-style trio with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. Then drummer Buddy Rich was added to the session, so the album would be recommendable on the rhythm section’s performance alone. Producer Norman Granz chose the all-standards repertoire, which was entirely recorded on August 16, 1956. For the joyful opener “Can’t We Be Friends” Ella sings first, followed by Louis (dropping a slight scat), who then takes a brash and economical trumpet solo. Highlights (among a collection of highlights) include “Tenderly” (with Armstrong’s instrumental introduction), the inspired vocal interplay of “Cheek to Cheek,” and the sustained loveliness of “The Nearness of You.”. Amazing (5 stars) This is a BEAUTIFUL collection :') Awesome (5 stars) Its addicting and it's awesome BiographyBorn: April 25, 1917 in Newport News, VAGenre: Jazz Years Active: '30s, '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time (although some may vote for Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday). Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution; one could always understand the words she sang. The one fault was that, since she always sounded so happy to be singing, Fitzgerald did not always dig below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
