Our Review

By the mid-70s the Rolling Stones were suffering major adjustment problems as the world's biggest — did someone say greatest? — rock n' roll band. Keith Richards was mired in heroin use, guitarist Mick Taylor quit the group and Mick Jagger seemed more interested in celebrity than rock n' roll. Black and Blue was put together piecemeal from a variety of sessions while the group auditioned for Taylor's replacement, eventually settling on the Faces' Ron Wood. With Richards faltering, Jagger mimicked and expanded the Stones' textbook approach. They had raised the bar to impossible heights and two egregious miscues are good for a laugh at our heroes' expense: the flat reggae of"Cherry Oh Baby" and the unfunk of "Hey Negrita." But "Hand of Fate" is purebred Stones, a chunky slasher of whiplash rhythm and gratuitous violence. "Fool to Cry" features Jagger with a Curtis Mayfield falsetto in a tale of unusual sensitivity. "Crazy Mama" recycles Chuck Berry. "Memory Motel" serves as the album's opus, climaxing with Richards waking from the dead to let us know, "She's got a mind of her own and she used it well, yeah."

Highly Underrated (5 stars)
I have always liked a couple of the songs on here ("Hot Stuff", "Hand of Fate", "Hey Negrita") but only until recently did I actually appreciate how good the whole album is. Definitely worth the seven bucks. What is so surprising is that these songs aren't very well known and people get to miss out on their beauty. Behind "Let it Bleed," I would say this is my favorite Stones album.

"Hot stuff...I can't get enough!!" Yes, indeed. (5 stars)
This is a really enjoyable album. The songs are simple and make you want to dance. These guys are great musicians. I thought it was their first album. But then one of my friends told me that they actually have other albums that they've put out. I'm considering giving their other albums a listen to. Hot Stuff is about a guy who likes hot things. The singer sings, "Hot stuff, I can't get enough." Either that or there is a shortage. F

great stuff, but...... (4 stars)
This is the 3rd time these cd's have been released in my lifetime-once w/ CBS, another w/ Virgin.....why why why do we not get ANY BONUS TRACKS, outtakes, live songs, anything? There are tons of rarities in the vaults, it seems like The Stones don't care much about giving their fans anything extra. The music is great here though, some lost classics, like Hey Negrita, Hand of Fate, and the magnificent epic ballad Memory Motel.....but I am not

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
