R.E.M. for the masses (5 stars)
This is probably R.E.M.'s most varied album. It has everything, pop, rock, instrumental and as always, Michael Stipe's genius lyrics backed by catchy guitar work. I think it's also their most accesible album. Hits like "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon" are what would come to mind for most people, but there's also a second tier catchy songs including "Try Not to Breathe," "The Sidewinder Sleeps Toni

One of the top R.E.M. albums (5 stars)
The first thing I want to say about this record is that it is a classic. One of the very best albums of the 1990s and besides Murmur, the best R.E.M. album. It starts off with "Drive," my favorite album opener ever. The album is a somber listen, but ultimately a very beautiful listen. It doesn't rock hard like some REM, but is a very transcending listening experience. Do yourself a favor, buy it! You won't regret it.

A Must Have. (5 stars)
This album is by far one of the best R.E.M. albums ever. Everything is tight on this album....the singing, the songwriting, lyrics, and guitar work. Some true classics on this one "Drive" "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" "Man On the Moon" "Nightswimming" "Everybody Hurts" Need I say more? This is a must have, R.E.M. fan or not.

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Athens, GA
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
