Our Review

Recorded in 1969, Johnny Cash At San Quentin yielded the massively-popular “A Boy Named Sue” and introduced a younger audience to the virtues of The Man In Black’s music. Despite its success, it took over three decades for Cash’s entire set to see the light of day. In its complete form, At San Quentin is an even more riveting experience. Reaching out to his prison inmate audience, Cash finds humor in hard knocks and distills wisdom out of suffering. His renditions of “Wanted Man,” “I Walk The Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues” don’t so much celebrate the outlaw life as confront and transcend it. Significantly, the complete edition of At San Quentin adds the gospel material Cash included in his set. With help from the Carter Family, the Statler Brothers and Carl Perkins, he dives into “Daddy Sang Bass,” “He Turned Water Into Wine” and “The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago” with the conviction of a wayward preacher come home. Restored dialogue between Cash and his comrades adds to the intimacy. Cash’s San Quentin concert is both a recording of historic importance and a hellacious good time, worth savoring from start to finish.

Not a Partial Album! (5 stars)
This is the COMPLETE 1969 Concert. It has all 18 tracks from the reissued CD. It may have been shown as a partial album due to the now existent 3-disc box set (2006), but this is the full show, and it (along with "Folsom Prison") is one of the only live albums that is not a blight on an artist's discography - it may actually be one of the best, if not THE SINGLE best, album(s) Cash ever released. It's got everything a body could

One of the All-Time Best (5 stars)
Apparently iTunes did not originally have this whole album, but that is no longer the case. And this is simply an all-time classic by Johnny Cash. Not only are there many great songs here, but the connection he creates with the inmates is palpable, and the production value is great. For example, how many artists and producers would have the guts to include the same song (San Quentin) back to back? That must have driven the tight laced Na

Partial album? I was going to buy this album on i-tunes but i think i'll go to tower records and just buy the whole thing instead

Biography

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
