At Folsom Prison (Legacy Edition) – Johnny CashView More By Johnny Cash Our ReviewOn January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash performed two shows at Folsom Prison that were cut down to a single LP which went on to become a critical and commercial success, resuscitating Cash’s career and earning two Grammy Awards. Forty years later, the recordings have been released uncut, featuring both shows, including seven unreleased tracks from the first show and an astonishing 24 from the second one. Cash is clearly on his game, egged on by the rapturous reception from his hard-nosed crowd of prison inmates. He plays to their situation with songs that reflect their lives with “Folsom Prison Blues,” Shel Silverstein’s “25 Minutes to Go,” the Everly Brothers’ “I’m Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail,” Harlan Howard’s “Busted,” and Cash’s own “I Got Stripes.” Among the previously unreleased tracks, the guest spots by Carl Perkins on his “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Matchbox,” the Statler Brothers for “This Ole House,” “You Can Have Your Kate and Edith, Too,” and a duet from Johnny and future wife June Carter on Ray Charles’ “I’ve Got A Woman” are welcomed additions. Alternate takes of “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Dark as a Dungeon” and “Cocaine Blues” jump out as exquisite performances from a man looking to regain his form after years of tough living.. Customer ReviewsMan in Black (5 stars)Johnny Cash was an absolute legacy and his music is legendary for it's originality and soul. Each one of these songs has true meaning behind it and you can tell by the way he sings them. This album is a MUST HAVE for any Cash fan. LEGEND IN BLACK is BACK! (5 stars) Hello My Name is Johnny Cash>>> Those words / in that deep dark voice will live on forever... From Sun Records with his buddies Elvis, Jerry Lee an friends... He went on to become the greatest legends ever... I was never into Country Music... & even now with it's bubblegum, top 40, so-called country sound / I could take it or leave it. But somehow this Man In Black captured my ear & our hearts... He crossed over from True Country Music (5 stars) I received this edition as a Christmas gift from my wife. It doesn't get any better than this. "Long-Legged Guitar Pickin' Man," "Flowers On the Wall," and "Green, Green Grass of Home" are what country music is all about. Solid collection that will stand the test of time. BiographyBorn: February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, ARGenre: Country Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
