Our Review

By turns searing, sensuous and mesmerizing, Santana’s Abraxas (1970) remains one of the milestones of early ‘70s rock. Its appeal is easy to grasp — the music here is an intoxicating brew of Afro-Cuban percussion, bold keyboards and the virtuosic guitar of the band’s namesake. “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen” is illustrative of how Santana could forge links between rock and Latin styles without compromising the essence of either. Tracks like the spacey “Singing Winds, Crying Beasts” and the hypnotic “Samba Pa Ti” have a reflective feel, while “Incident at Neshabur” and a magnificent rendering of Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” flow with molten force. The band’s muscle and finesse transform even fairly conventional tunes like “Mother’s Daughter” and “Hope You’re Feeling Better” into unstoppable jams. Carlos Santana’s blazing fretwork and probing solo flights gain crucial support from Chepito Areas’ rippling congas and Gregg Rolie’s gritty organ. Santana (the band) would splinter as Santana (the solo artist) forged new paths — but some consider this album the greatest achievement of both.

Santana Abraxas (5 stars)
Mr. Santana at his best. At a time when Latino music wasnt popular in the mainstream he forged ahead with his superb guitar and heartfelt stories in his songs. This album(yes album) played over and over on my father's turntable. We all sang it together it is a beautiful expression of life, love and of his extreme guitar.

Santana's Best (5 stars)
It seems to me that Carlos Santana is the only band member whose talents are fully appreciated. Greg Rolie is an exceptionally talented keyboardist with a great voice who contributed vastly to the band's unique sound (listen to his masterpiece "Hope You're Feeling Better"). Santana also has a great bassist and 3 awesome percussionists. So please, listen to this album and appreciate all 6 members of one of the most amazing and uniqu

Santana's second and probably best album (4 stars)
There's no question that Carlos Santana has a unique musical approach. He combines groovy blues-rock with Latin jazz and sprinkles some modern rock on top. "Abraxas," Santana's second album is possibly the best and most unique record he's ever released (until "Supernatural"). "Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen" is the catchiest and probably best known track on this record. Featuring a groovy, catchy guitar riff wi

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel...
