Our Review

Released as a two-LP box set and separately as the albums Wear Your Love Like Heaven and For Little Ones, A Gift from a Flower to a Garden is a wonderful piece of 1967. The Heaven material includes the catchy psychedelic pop of “Wear Your Love Like Heaven,” the childlike innocence of “Little Boy In Corduroy” and the organ-propelled romp, “Mad John’s Escape.” The instrumentation is lush and varied, allowing for guitar, organ, flute, bongos and drums. Even more fascinating is the Little Ones material recorded with little more than acoustic instruments. Here, Donovan taps into his inner child. “Song of the Naturalist’s Wife” is a spare, haunting piece of music that begins with a baby’s cry and nature sounds, while “The Enchanted Gypsy” captures a hypnotic sway with carefully arranged accompaniment. “The Lullaby of Spring,” “Widow With Shawl (A Portrait)” and “Starfish-on-the-Toast” represent the hippie vision at its most back-to-basics, with a refreshing optimism washing over the tracks. Yet, it’s quite sophisticated as music for children and is best enjoyed by adults with a silly streak.

A gift from a Flower to a Garden (5 stars)
This album contains some of Donovan's best songs, especially on the second of the two original records in the set. Unfortunately, most of these songs are probably unknown to many who have only been exposed to Donovan's AM radio hits. I disagree with the itunes reviewer's remark that they are "best enjoyed by adults with a silly streak." That might be more appropriate to a few on the first album, but the second is purely delightf

An Album of My Youth (5 stars)
I have enjoyed this album since my teen years. I never saw it as a child's album. It was very much an album of the 60's with the return to nature and the British invasion to music. It is reminiscent of other English folk albums of the time like Tir Na Nog.
The songs are stories, images, sparkling samplings of a simpler life.

Donovans best (5 stars)
This album is probably the best Donovan has ever done. The music is timeless poetry that defines Donovan as the brilliant singer/songwriter that he is. Although "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" and "Isle Of Islay" are probably the only songs to reach popularity, every song on this album is a gem. "The Mandolin Man and His Secret" is one of my favorites by Donovan. At online 10 dollars this is a great buy, every

Upon his emergence during the mid-'60s, Donovan was anointed "Britain's answer to Bob Dylan," a facile but largely unfounded comparison which compromised the Scottish folk-pop troubadour's own unique vision. Where the thrust of Dylan's music remains its bleak introspection and bitter realism, Donovan fully embraced the wide-eyed optimism of the flower power movement, his ethereal, ornate songs radiating a mystical beauty and childlike wonder; for better or worse, his recordings remain quintessential...
