This is not so much a review, rather my thoughts on the film, now right after i saw it. There is plenty of reviews around that can explain the plot without spoilers better than me. Before i begin however, i want to say this. If you haven't seen the original film, see that first, and see the final cut version. Not the director's cut, not the theatrical cut. But the final cut. Very important. So here we go.

Denis Villeneuve, you magnificent world wonder, you did it again. I never doubted in this project after i heard he was hired as the director, as i have seen almost all of Denis films, and what i have noticed is this: The man simply cannot make a bad movie, and not only that, he always delivers something awesome. He makes films that make you think, and at the same time bring you brilliant photography, great stories and excellent acting. He is one of the best directors working in the industry today.

And then i heard they hired Roger Deakins for the cinematography, then you just know this is going to become spectacular. Deakins and Villeneuve had also already collaborated on two movies before this, Prisoners and Sicario, both really good films. Deakins is hands down and without any doubt one of the best cinematographers ever to work in the movie industry. He has been nominated for 13 Oscars! But as of yet, never won, but that is now about to change, there is no excuse this time, Deakins has shot some of the most beautiful scenes i have ever seen in any movie.

Because oh my lord, the images in this film, it's like a dream, you just sit there in awe of this absolutely gorgeous piece of art that is being displayed in front of you. At almost 3 hours in length you'd expect it to feel long, but i didn't notice at all, i was just sitting there eating eye candy and forgot i was even in a cinema. The film delivers the same tone and atmosphere as the first film, but it takes it further in almost every way, it feels like a natural continuation of the original, without trying to overdo or redo it, it just flows naturally. Not only the gorgeous images, but also the story and the narrative. Not to mention the fantastic soundtrack.

BR2049 is in my opinion Denis first masterpiece, others might disagree with me on that and claim he has already made several of those, which I'm perfectly fine with, I'm just being difficult.

I really love many of his films and i think he is a brilliant director, but i felt he wasn't quite there yet, but i was absolutely sure he would make one (or many) eventually. The one film that will stand as a monument in his career and forever remind ourselves what this guy is truly capable of. Well this is that film, he hits all the right notes and this will become a timeless sci-fi just like the original, that is a near certain guarantee. This is Villeneuve's true vision, the director's cut, and it's an instant classic.

And on that note, Villeneuve's next movie might be Dune, imagine if he brings Deakins to make that movie. Yeah, I'm going to leave you with that thought. This is basically porn. And we can't talk about that now can we? might be minors reading this.

And Denis who loves to film on actual sets rather than make everything in Green Screen. His philosophy is that an actor needs something to hold in his hand, something to stand on, something to look at, something to sit in, to be able to create the real emotions his scenes require. And in the spirit of this philosophy they have created some absolutely gorgeous sets for this film, it's easy to admire and appreciate real props and sets in these times of heavy CGI, you just notice, and it brings a certain warmth to the film. But that's not to say the CGI in this film isn't appreciated, because the CGI in BR2049 is nothing short of spectacular, and as everything else in this film it looks and feels like it's made just right.

And what about the cast? Well what can i say? They nailed it, and this is not the uninspired Harrison Ford we saw in "The Force Awakens" and quite a few other films, this is the real Harrison Ford, the badass, the Blade Runner, the Indiana Jones, and he is accompanied by a great Ryan Gosling which character the film is centered on, and his performance is spot on and believable. And all the other actors also perform really well and it feels like they all belong in the film.

Everything about this film just feels right and well orchestrated. There are no mistakes with Villeneuve it seems, and if there are, it would probably just be happy little accidents as Rob Ross would have put it. This movie is like a painting, every stroke of the brush matters, and every little detail is carefully crafted, it takes monumental skills to pull this film of, and oh boy did this crew have those skills, and then some.

I'm going back to the cinema to see this film at least two more times. I saw it in 3D first time around, so 4DX and 2D is next. At least then I'm covered, and also, this movie really demands a second viewing, there is just so much information to take in.

I loved this film, it's the best film I've seen all year, actually the best film I've seen in years. It is a must see, a monumental triumph of a film that is just as good (maybe even better) as the original and one of the best sequels of all time!

10/10 - Masterpiece
