What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits – The Doobie BrothersView More By The Doobie Brothers Our ReviewAs had been the custom on previous Doobie Brothers efforts, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits splits its songs between the talents of the group’s two leaders, Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons. Simmons’ forte was hard rock and finger-picked folk — he brought this album the stomping, snaky riff of “You Just Can’t Stop It,” as well as the gentle acoustic numbers “Black Water” and “Tell Me What You Want (And I’ll Give You What You Need).” Johnston, meanwhile, was responsible for the group’s ventures into jazz and funk. He gave to the album the tightly woven riffs of “Spirit” and “Eyes of Silver,” as well as “Song to See You Through” and “Another Park, Another Sunday,” songs that are relaxed but deeply rooted in R&B groove. As usual, a host of guest musicians are onboard to keep the music spicy. Arlo Guthrie’s autoharp and harmonica-playing pop up in places, and percussionists Eddie Guzman (of Rare Earth) and Milt Holland invest the music with their knowledge of international rhythms. For the flavor of Southern R&B, the brass parts are provided by the Memphis Horns, while New Orleans piano legend James Booker puts the boogie in “Down In the Track.”. Customer ReviewsBest of the Doobie Brothers with Tom Johnston (5 stars)What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. What a name for a rock album. Each song here will grab you and make you listen carefully. While Spirit is my favorite Doobie song of all of their songs, this album really shows their range early on in their careers. Song to See You Through is a great start, then Spirit. Pursuit on 53rd Street is a great rocker about trying to get a cab to stop and meet a lady who has just walked by. I have to save some s I say Good Day (4 stars) well done, i have the actual record( the gigantic black disk). the remastered version isn't bad though. boy, did this make me feel edgy (5 stars) During high school, this was the "edgy" sound that people didn't necessarily listen to during the early to mid 70's...still love listening to it today and it takes me back, thanks doobies BiographyFormed: March, 1970 in San Jose, CAGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s As one of the most popular California pop/rock bands of the '70s, the Doobie Brothers evolved from a mellow, post-hippie boogie band to a slick, soul-inflected pop band by the end of the decade.
