Weezer (Green Album) – WeezerView More By Weezer Our ReviewAfter Weezer’s risky 1997 thrash makeover Pinkerton, succumbed to the sophomore curse with an ignominious — and largely undeserved — critical and commercial drubbing, the band went into literal and artistic retreat. They resurfaced four years later both chastened and refocused by the experience, a band seemingly eager to reclaim its mantle as geekdom’s premiere pop-rockers. Echoing their 1994 debut right down to producer Ric Ocasek and the primary color scheme of its cover (whose hue got it dubbed “Green Album”), it’s an exercise in shrewd, if brisk pop economy whose best tracks confirm songwriter Rivers Cuomo’s quirky gifts. “Don’t Let Go” and “Smile” may be a tad more distanced than “Undone” and “Buddy Holly,” even if they could as well be templates for contemporary punk-pop pretenders with half his talent. “Knockdown Dragout” and “Glorious Days” positively bristle, while the snarky anthem “Hash Pipe” could only be the product of Cuomo’s skewed brilliance.. Customer ReviewsNot their best (2 stars)"Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" are the most distinct songs on this album. But tracks 5, 7,8, 9, and 10, half of the album, sound excatly the same. That's not to say they're bad songs, but after listening to it for awhile, you can get sick of it, much the same way as you get sick of too much soda. This album has become synonomous with the modern Weezer sound, which is no where near as good as the previous two albums. The Green Album (5 stars) Weezer's Third Album album took five years to be released after Pinkerton. This dosen't mean that they've lost their skill or touch though. It resembles their debut in more ways than one. Like the plain green cover with the band members, the same producer and the similiarly written material. Most of the songs are as sunny and bright as the blue album, but less hard rocking and more poppier. The guitars are absent of the raw energy of pi Pop Perfection (5 stars) Although a large amount of the "Hiatus period" songs are unheard, Green Album is probably a good pointer to what they sounded like. Rivers knew very well that his 1996 album was a failure because it was hard to embrace such a rough sound. He also knew very well that the album kept Weezer alive for the late '90s. Regardless, Rivers chose (whether to save himself or to annoy the fans) to write a pop album. That's what this album BiographyFormed: 1993 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Alternative Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer received equal amounts of criticism and praise for their hook-heavy guitar pop. Drawing from the heavy power pop of arena rockers like Cheap Trick and the angular guitar leads of the Pixies, Weezer leavened their melodies with doses of '70s metal learned from bands like Kiss. What truly set the band apart, though, was their geekiness. None of the members of Weezer, especially leader Rivers Cuomo, were...
