Turnstiles – Billy JoelView More By Billy Joel Our ReviewPiano Man hit a high point of songwriting, keyboard prowess, and musical connectivity with Turnstiles, an exploration of transitions. The entire album can be seen as a song cycle, exploring Joel's own past, present, and imagined future. It begins with the Spector homage "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." Midway through, "New York State of Mind," in all its piano grace, embraces his return to the Empire State. The album concludes with a sweeping homage "I've Loved These Days" segueing into the rocking (by Joel standards) "Miami 2017 (I’ve Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)" which imagines his future in the Sunshine State following the destruction of Manhattan. Joel himself wrestled with identity, adulthood and success against the passage of time. The manic piano prelude to his "Prelude/Angry Young Man" contains equal parts virtuosity and pomposity...just like the subject of the song. Unsure where he stands, in "Summer, Highland Falls" (a gorgeous ballad), Joel sings "It's either sadness or euphoria." On Turnstiles, he spits out equal shares of both.. Customer ReviewsThe BEST Album From Billy Joel (5 stars)This CD is better than any other Billy Joel Album his best writing is shown on this album. Man the songs James and angry young man are great songs and New York State Of Mind is A Timeless Classic. This album is The BEST Joel is the best in the music world (5 stars) Another Joel album with just outstanding music and lyrics. "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and "Summer, Highland Falls" are my favorites, but every song is a masterpiece. Every song Joel does seems to touch a different emotion for the listener, and it takes a special singer-songwriter to do that. his most underappreciated album (5 stars) i really think this is his best album :) so underappreciated though :( BiographyBorn: May 09, 1949 in New York, NY [The Bronx]Genre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar...
