The Rod Stewart Album – Rod StewartView More By Rod Stewart Our ReviewThis is the “raw” Rod Stewart. Before his pop hits. Before his move to Los Angeles. Before the dip into disco. When he was still “Rod the Mod,” having just left the Jeff Beck Group, and, with Ron Wood, begun a new group as the Faces, and still with enough time to kickstart a solo career. With Wood on guitar and his own incredible natural wonder of a voice, Rod Stewart held nothing back on this eight-song solo debut. His choice of covers is impeccable and well suited to his sandpaper rasp. And the band is simply relentless, the drums pounding, the acoustic guitars often more urgent than the electrics, and the keyboards tinkling as if performing in a bar filled with rowdy applause. The Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man” shudders with conviction. Mike d’Abo’s “Handbags and Gladrags” delivers a strong sense of self-reliance. “Man Of Constant Sorrow” is taken from its folk roots and turned into a rock epic. Stewart’s own tunes equally impress. “Blind Prayer” is practically heavy metal with brooding blues. “An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down” demands a honky-tonk stomp. “I Wouldn’t Change a Thing” sends the organ into overdrive. And “Cindy’s Lament” is pure rock drama. A classic.. Customer ReviewsHandbags and Gladrags is A Classic (5 stars)Let me start out by saying this is a great album as is all of Rod Stewart's Mercury Recordings. If you are going to get this album for just one song "Handbags and Gladrags" would be it. What else can be said about this song and as far as I am concerned only Rod Stewart's Version will do. "Man of Constant Sorrow" and "Street Fighting Man" are great too and I suggest you get "Gasoline Alley" and "E Not the Disco Rod (5 stars) Handbags and Gladrags is the most popular, but my favorites are Street Fighting Man (loose and fun, interesting turn on the Stones classic) and Dirty Old Town. All the rest are good, so I recommend getting the box set of Mercury albums. The price is right, and Rod's Mercury catalog is simply the best he ever did, and equal to the best of the period. Gold (5 stars) This album is Gold. Stewart was in his prime and he was releasing the best music he would ever get to release. I love "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down." This album is just an all around fine example of good ole rock 'n roll. BiographyBorn: January 10, 1945 in London, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Rod Stewart may have begun his career as a respected singer, yet that critical respect eroded as he got older, as he became more concerned with stardom and adult contemporary songcraft than the rock music that launched him. While he has recorded some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart was once rock & roll's best interpretive singer as well as an accomplished songwriter, creating a raw combination of folk, rock, blues, and country that sounded like no other...
