The Payback – James BrownView More By James Brown Our ReviewUltimately rejected by the film producers for whom Brown spent much of 1973 recording this music — including the title track, possibly his most emblematic ’70s track — The Payback instead arrived as a double LP whose cohesion helped make for something of a landmark. By this stage in the Godfather’s career, his funk was often sleeker than gutbucket masterworks such as “Cold Sweat,” but hardly less daunting. For instance, “Mind Power” keeps the JBs on the good foot for 12 minutes (a 90-second expansion of the original vinyl track) while Brown turns the Biblical trope of “two little fishes, five loaves of bread” into an on-the-one hook, pays lip service to ESP, tips his cap to the Funky Robot and delivers the exhortation “Gimme some flute!” Maceo Parker’s sax and Fred Wesley’s trombone do the business there, as well as on “Shoot Your Shot,” one of several cuts that boast organ solos that go uncredited, but which bear the mark of the leader’s own idiosyncratic keyboard style.. Customer ReviewsThe Payback (5 stars)One of James Brown's funkiest tunes ever!!! James Brown's vocals are hard, soulful and baadass. The JB's turn it out with Fred Thomas playing such a funky bassline, Fred Wesley's soulful and nasty horn arrangements and the steady tight groove by the rhythm section. I can't forget to mention, Miss Martha High's brilliant clear voice on top of all that soulful music.... I can dance all night to this jam!!! "I don't know karate..." (5 stars) "But I know ka-RAZOR!" Yeah, say it man. Soul Brother Number 1 still had some kick in the early/mid 70's, and I loved this record a LOT. Peace - Cool Free Hard BOP this is the best that he ever did!!! the definition of james brown!! (5 stars) a must have period!!!!!!!!!!! BiographyBorn: May 03, 1933 in Barnwell, SCGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s "Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" — those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other African-American musicians were so influential over the course of popular music. And no other musician, pop or...
