The Greatest Hits 1970-2002 – Elton JohnView More By Elton John Our ReviewThis thorough comp spans over three decades of Sir Elton’s musical career on two discs worth of tunes. The first spotlights his esteemed hits from the ‘70s starting with the piano ballad “Your Song” (set to Paul Buckmaster’s lush string accompaniment) followed by the more dramatic “Levon,” which mused on Levon Helm (the Band was Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin’s favorite musical group). Taupin’s wife Maxine was also the subject of fan favorite “Tiny Dancer,” which turns up here in all its pedal-steel-laced splendor before the David Bowie-inspired “Rocket Man” blasts off. Those old enough to remember the ‘70s’ fascination with the ‘50s are sure to dig “Crocodile Rock” with its malt-shop backing vocals and kitschy Farfisa organ. Disc Two hones in on Sir Elton’s duets and ballads beginning with mom-rock favorite and #1 chart topper (with Kiki Dee) “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and ending with 2001’s ballad about aging “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore.”.
