The Definitive Collection – Lionel RichieView More By Lionel Richie Our ReviewHugely popular throughout the '70s and '80s, Lionel Richie started his career as a founding member of The Commodores. That funk/soul group racked up a slew of crossover hits, including timeless party jams ("Brick House") and ultra-smooth love songs ("Easy"). In the early to mid-'80s Richie was one of the planet's biggest pop stars, right up there with Prince and M.J., unleashing a long run of chart-topping singles and becoming especially well-known for his tearjerker ballads and now-classic videos. This 20-track compilation features a handful of early Commodores favorites, notably "Three Times a Lady" and "Just To Be Close to You," as well as Richie's '80s-era solo standouts like "All Night Long," "Stuck on You," and "All Night Long (All Night)." The playlist ends with lesser-known newer material ("Angel," "Goodbye"), but those songs still showcase his uniquely captivating voice. Overall a great collection from one of this generation's greatest singer/songwriters.. Customer ReviewsGOTTA LOVE LIONEL RITCHIE (5 stars)My favorite genre has become country for some strange reason. Lionel trained me how to truly romance my future wife toward an endless love (5 stars) When I was dating my wife of what now is nearly 29 years, Elyse, living with her cousin Barbara in Manhattan on 69th Street (you got that right! LOL) and Second Avenue in the early 80s, we'd work out at The Vertical Club in the shadow of the 59th Street Bridge, then stop at a deli on the way uptown to her place so I could get my regimen of stuffed grape leaves, then snuggle on the couch in the living room, listening to Lionel Richie on the BiographyBorn: June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, ALGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s After leaving the Commodores, Lionel Richie became one of the most successful male solo artists of the '80s, arguably eclipsed during his 1981-1987 heyday only by Michael Jackson and Prince. Richie dominated the pop charts during that period with an incredible run of 13 consecutive Top Ten hits, five of them number ones. As his popularity skyrocketed, Richie moved farther away from his R&B origins and concentrated more on adult contemporary balladry, which had been one of his strengths even as...
