The Clash (US) – The ClashView More By The Clash Our ReviewReleased in the U.K. in 1977, the Clash’s debut was a 14-song knockout — the most impassioned, sophisticated LP of punk’s first wave. However when the album was finally released in the U.S. two years later in 1979, it was given a makeover. Epic Records excised the British release’s four weakest cuts (“Deny,” “Protex Blue,” “Cheat,” “48 Hours”) and replaced them with five non-album singles and b-sides, drawn mostly from 1978 and 1979. The reconfigured U.S. version emphasized songwriting chops over the pure insurgent anger of the original LP. Still, the inclusion of masterworks like “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais” and “Complete Control” gives the re-release a depth that wasn’t fully apparent on the original, while songs like “I Fought the Law” and “Jail Guitar Doors” pointed toward the heroics of London Calling. Strictly speaking, the U.S. version of The Clash is a compilation, not a debut album. But while the U.K. release concisely captures a moment in time for the brilliant young lads from London, the U.S. version offers a richer picture of an ascending band’s talents.. Customer ReviewsThe Clash (5 stars)I was so happy when my dad introduced me to this band. They have the loud angry voice of punk's prime, and there songs still can be related to today (ex. "Hate and War/the only thing we are today...). Frankly, to find this kind of music, the only place you can find it is in the past. Just think, we basically only have PopPunk bands sounding anything remotly like this. I just hope that this type off music will one day rise from the dead, What??? (5 stars) First of all this album is not pop! This album is Punk and Punk alone. The Clash are the greatest band that ever existed and iTunes stupidly classifies the as pop. Listen to the album and you'll agree with me totally! The clash were a part of the punk rock revolution in the 70s and iTunes can't even show any respect. JEEZ! Great Album, Buy It Off Amazon (5 stars) Classic Punk album, but not the Clash's best. Off Amazon.com it's like 8 bucks so get the hard copy. Even with shipping it will be cheaper. BiographyFormed: 1976 in London, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones,...
