The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs – Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006 – Bob DylanView More By Bob Dylan Our ReviewThe eighth volume in the ongoing Bootleg Series covers the most recent stage in Bob Dylan’s career: his entry into old age, a transition that has resulted in some of his most fascinating work to date. The bulk of Tell Tale Signs is drawn from the sessions for 1989’s Oh Mercy and 1997’s Time Out of Mind, two albums overseen by Daniel Lanois, the producer renowned for his work on U2’s The Joshua Tree. Between Lanois’ creative influence and Dylan’s perfectionism, many of the best songs from these sessions were left on the cutting room floor. The brilliant “Dignity” is presented here in two versions, one a spare piano rumination and the other a rock’n’roll rave-up that presages Love & Theft and Modern Times. Although “Series of Dreams” shows that Lanois sometimes strained too hard to turn Oh Mercy into another Joshua Tree, the outtakes from Time Out of Mind remind us that that album resulted in some of the best work of either man’s career. And “Tell Ol’ Bill” and “Can’t Escape From You” show that Dylan has only sharpened the blueprint he began on Time Out of Mind, while two versions of “Mississippi” find him playing the wizened, cryptic bluesman his advanced age has finally allowed him to embody.. Customer ReviewsWipe the Blood off the Tracks, Dylan is Back (5 stars)This is a great collection of songs. Mysterious, elusive, enigmatic...just like the man himself. Love every song, every nuance, everything about it. Songs with color and character. And if you love the character's Bob's created here, you should take a look at the new novel, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, a murder mystery set in the rock world in which all the suspects are characters in Bob's songs. An entire book built around Bob's creations? That's ju Series of Dreams (& Nightmares) (5 stars) Dylan releases his most hauntingly beautiful album; if not for previous albums, his best. Perhaps best to be considered as a companion piece to his recent american roots-blues-folk trilogy, TIME OUT OF MIND, LOVE & THEFT,MODERN TIME Much like those albums, we're not talking a wide eyed aspiring beatnik, but an old man with trouble on his mind, a torn heart and a dour voice to expose this world, "city's just a jungle, more games to p Songs from the River (5 stars) This is a review of the 3 disc box set. Currently disc three is unavailable on i-tunes. The 2 disc version is $17.99 at the store; the box cost me $150 plus tax, which is ridiculous, but I'm a completist. It contains two nice books, one made up of reprints of singles sleeves. The third disc contains the great "Duncan & Brady" and "Mary and the Soldier", plus 10 other tracks including live versions of "Cold Irons BiographyBorn: May 24, 1941 in Duluth, MNGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
