Taking the Long Way – Dixie ChicksView More By Dixie Chicks Our ReviewDixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines closed and opened a few doors when she made her impromptu anti-George Bush and anti-war remarks from a London stage in 2003. Stylistically, it recharged the band to aim less for country music tradition and more for the crossover pop success that always seemed within their grasp. The album's first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," defiantly addresses Maines' controversy and the title track is similarly fueled. However, Long Way is hardly an Op-Ed page set to music. Producer Rick Rubin, known for his judicious hand with country legend Johnny Cash, matches up the Chicks with songwriters outside the Nashville mainstream who collaborate with them to bring out the band's strengths, from Crowded House power-pop expert Neil Finn ("Silent House") to alt-country stalwart, ex-Jayhawk Gary Louris ("Everybody Knows,""Baby Hold On") to modern bluesman Keb' Mo' ("I Hope") and Sheryl Crow ("Favorite Year'). This new urbane profile jumpstarts their harmonies and adds an urgency previously unheard in their sound.. Customer ReviewsBuy this album! (5 stars)The pain that these three girls and their families went through due to the backlash from "a then war and Bush supportive" America is the most un-American thing that has ever happened in musical history! This album is a great tribute to that pain they experienced. It has become a way for them to honor the sisterhood they share between them. BUT, besides all that, it is really well put together and is wonderful to listen to becaus Outspoken (5 stars) This has to be one of my all-time favorite CDs. Every song has a different feel to it. Each song is amazing. Not only is Natalie Maines (the lead singer) one of the best singers in the world, but the other girls (Emily and Martie) harmonize perfectly with her. I love how they incorporated rock with the country songs on this CD. You can feel what they are trying to tell you. Each song has a significant meaning to it, too. I can relate to seve Great CD!! Thank you for Freedom of Speech! (5 stars) This CD is great! I just watched the DVD "Shut Up & Sing". Wow! What a great documentary! This CD was written during those trying times. Without the expression of freedom of speech at the London concert in 2003, this CD would not exist. Everything happens for a reason... BiographyFormed: 1989 in Dallas, TXGenre: Country Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Formed in 1989 as a Western-themed bluegrass band, the Dixie Chicks eventually became one of the most popular acts in contemporary country music, as well as the highest-selling female group of all time. Beginning with 1998's Wide Open Spaces, they struck a balance between the commercial, radio-ready aesthetic of country-pop and the rootsy sound of neo-traditionalist country, a combination that helped distinguish the trio from such concurrent stars as Shania Twain. The Dixie Chicks further distanced...
