She's So Unusual (Remastered) – Cyndi LauperView More By Cyndi Lauper Our ReviewLooking back, it’s hard to imagine the mid-1980s without Cyndi Lauper — her giddy vocal hiccup and dizzy-dame persona helped define the pop culture of the time. She’s So Unusual (1983) launched her as a solo artist and remains her definitive statement. Lauper came across as lovably odd, but no bimbo — she played the hard-boiled realist in “Money Changes Everything” and the freewheeling hedonist in “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” with equal conviction. Sexual rule-breaking is a persistent subtext in these tunes, heard in the twitchy “She Bop” and the lustful “I’ll Kiss You.” From a different place comes the naïve tenderness of “All Through The Night” and “Time After Time.” Cyndi veers between punky affectation and old-fashioned sincerity with aplomb, propelled by techno-pop keyboard lines draped in atmospheric guitar shadings. She’s So Unusual made Lauper a star and gave the music world a much-needed dose of pure pop pleasure. Its combination of good-natured raunch and girlish innocence still has the power to send you bouncing and bopping (if not hiccupping) with abandon.. Customer ReviewsIndisposable! (5 stars)I got this cassette for my 8th birthday, and 22 years later it is still one of the most powerful, thrilling, delightful, and fun listening experiences I have. The master review on the iTunes page for this collection sums it up nicely, though I've never thought about Cyndi Lauper's voice as thin! It is vast and rich, though it is also true that the fullness of her voice has st Years beyond just "having fun". (5 stars) Years after having tired of hearing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", I have to say that this is probably one the most amazing albums in my collection. I know that the song, along with "True Colors" and the perennial classic "Time After Time" are her signature songs but one must look deeper into the album to understand Cyndi Lauper. "Money Changes Everything" is a brilliant album opener. Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early '80s, which helped lead her not only to the top of the charts, but also to stardom. Throughout America, there were...
