Rastaman Vibration (Remastered) – Bob MarleyView More By Bob Marley Our Review1976’s Rastaman Vibration is often cited as the album that finally broke Bob Marley into the American pop market. While this may be true from a sales standpoint, musically Rastaman Vibration is in fact something of a welcome stylistic digression for Marley, who paused to record this album of rough-hewn reggae in the midst of his metamorphosis from Rasta proselytizer to pop star. Since signing with Island Records in 1973 Marley had been inching away from the deep, dreader-than-dread sound of his early Lee Perry helmed recordings, crafting a brighter pop sound with more universal appeal. Rastaman Vibration, however, found Marley collaborating with veteran Jamaican producer Joe Gibbs, whose trademark heavyweight sound lends the album a welcome dose of bass-laden foreboding. On the thundering “War” Marley quotes Haile Sellassie over a stuttering, strangulated rhythm that drips with the threat of imminent violence, while the creeping drum machines of “Johnny Was” lend a sense of tragic inevitability to Marley’s tale of an inner city shooting. Rastaman Vibration is one of Marley’s most accomplished albums, a welcome return to the rough and ready sound upon which he had built his reputation.. Customer ReviewsWho the Cap FIt (5 stars)Around 1976, when I was in Grade 9 or 10, my family traveled to Jamaica for what we called March break (we're Canadain, eh). It was the only time in my life that I have been to the Caribbean. We did not stay on the north shore, but rather a hotel/resort on the outskirts of Kingston. Thinking back, it was kind of rough. We took a day trip up from Kingston to the North shore and went to the famous waterfalls there. We had a great driver w Rebel with a cause (and a sweet percussion section) (4 stars) Yes Bunny and Peter have since left the group, but really, on this album, it's hard to care. Soul still flows from this record so thick that you can't help get infected by it's beat. Part of the reason is because the Barrett brothers are still on board and provide sweet full bodied percussion for Bob. Another reason is because this album is so damn political and hard hitting that the message almost creeps up from behind disguised by the be Great Album (4 stars) I have to agree with the review above, this is a great album. The vocals of The Wailers really stand out in this CD. I would get Exodus and Catch a Fire before this one. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength.
