The punk-new wave movement of the late ‘70s had an interesting effect on seasoned musicians and the UK’s Police are perhaps the finest example. Drummer Stewart Copeland, guitarist Andy Summers and bassist Sting were all accomplished instrumentalists with a working knowledge of many genres and a studio savvy beyond their contemporaries. Yet, in order to cash in their chips, they smartly aligned themselves with the style of the times and stripped their approach down to its essentials, releasing with Outlandos d’Amour (Outlaws of Love), a smart, compact debut album that features sharp staccato guitars and tight, whiplash rhythms and remains one of the highlights of the era. Opening with the feral charge of “Next to You” and expanding outward with nods to reggae (“So Lonely,” “Hole In My Life”) and exquisite power pop (“Roxanne,” “Can’t Stand Losing You”), Outlandos only hints at the artistic scope the group had in its sights (though one can hear Summers leaking a dexterous guitar solo during “Peanuts”). Ironically, the disciplining and limiting rules of the punk genre enabled the Police to define themselves as one of the era’s most important and influential groups.

The album that changed punk forever (5 stars)
This album showed how the limitations of punk rock (simple chord progressions, blasting energy, simple lyrics) could be broken through sharp songwriting, superb musicianship, and borrowing from other musical genres. The melding of punk, rock, reggae, African rhythms, jazz, blues comes together in one of the most superb debut albums of all time from the greatest trio in rock history.

Mind Blowing (5 stars)
I bout sh*t when I first heard "Roxanne". There was nothing else like it at the time. Punk and Reggae. What a concept. Too bad Sting lost his way. I guess everyone gets old and loses their edge. To me, they are "The Greatest Band of All Time".

On the Edge (5 stars)
There was still a lot of Disco permiating the airwaves when this album came out. It blew some minds and chances are if you were not listening to The Police at this point, well then you just didn't get it and it was probably too late. This was one of my favorites to listen to cranked up on my Walkman!!!

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk.
