Other Covers – James TaylorView More By James Taylor Our ReviewHere’s a sweet companion piece to James Taylor’s first album of other people’s songs, Covers. The songs here were recorded during the same sessions and many of these tunes are selections that Taylor has been performing live throughout his career. Rodgers & Hammerstein's “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” sets the tone with a breezy late-afternoon cool as Taylor’s backing vocalists inject some timeless timbre to the choruses. Rather than closely follow the hard-driving, old-school, rock ‘n’ roll style of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis,” Taylor makes the song his own with a mellow mid-tempo rhythm and warm horns that recall early ‘70s AM radio hits — though the blues leads at the end nicely nod to the song’s roots. Things get much bluesier with the last three songs, especially on a soulful rendition of the old traditional “Wasn’t That a Mighty Storm” replete with a gospel choir and vintage guitar distortion. Taylor doesn’t deviate too far from the original formula of Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper’s “In the Midnight Hour.” Even the horn section sounds imported from the ‘60s.. Customer ReviewsOther Covers (4 stars)I suspect that this is the residue of his original album entitled "Covers" In other words, those songs that didn't make the first CD. They're not all great but there are enough bluesy rock 'n roll songs on here to make it worth the money for a fan of James Taylor's singing style! Concert Tour 2008 (3 stars) This album, and the previous are all from last summer's concert tour. At it, James explained he's always wanted to get the band together and cover some old classics. These are not the singer-songwriter tunes, but one he likes to sing. I'm just thrilled that a recording of Oh, What a Beautiful Morning is finally available. This is MORE like it! (5 stars) These are the songs which I expected more of on the orginal Covers albums - ones which he covered over the years in concert. While the concert versions had a bit more energy to them, this is a great addition to the orginal album! BiographyBorn: March 12, 1948 in Belmont, MAGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s When people use the term "singer/songwriter" (often modified by the word "sensitive") in praise or in criticism, they're thinking of James Taylor. In the early '70s, when he appeared with his introspective songs, acoustic guitar, and calm, understated singing style, he mirrored a generation's emotional exhaustion after tumultuous times. Just as Bing Crosby's reassuring voice brought the country out of the Depression and through World War II, Taylor's eased the transition from '60s activism and its...
