Our Review

Following the departure of longtime members Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and John Hartman, the Doobie Brothers were left in the hands of singer-keyboardist Michael McDonald. McDonald had proven his worth on the band’s previous album, Minute By Minute, which spawned the indelible GRAMMMY-winning hit “What A Fool Believes.” One Step Closer attempts to capitalize on that song’s success by focusing on smooth-jazz grooves and romantic, low-light atmospheres. McDonald delivers a trio of glowing, hypnotic pop songs (“Dedicate This Heart,” “Real Love” and “Keep This Train A-Rollin’”), but the rest of the band also gets a piece. Saxophonist Cornelius Bumpus offers “Thank You Love,” with a steamy halftime groove and his own strong vocal. Vibraphonist Chester McCracken and guitarist John McFee reinforce the jazz ambiance with the instrumental “South Bay Strut.” Even founding member Pastrick Simmons adjusts well to the overall change in tone—his “No Stoppin’ Us Now” and “Just In Time” blend the old Doobies with the new Doobies.

Im just gettin n2 the brothers but what ive got so far is amazing. I mean even the songs are sayin it. "Listen to the Music" The songs are not only great to listen to but fun to play on guitar. dont belive me try it out 4 yourself. overnout.

Just seeing the album cover brings back memories (4 stars)
I loved this album back in the day! Of course, I fall on the side of being more of a soul and blues fan so Michael McDonald was more my man than Patrick what's-his-toes. Real Love was the bomb and loved the soul-rock fusion of One Step Closer. Again, as long as I can hear Michael's voice, even in background, I was a happy girl.

One Step Closer to the end (2 stars)
every band goes beyon it's peak; this record is certainly on the down side of the DB's peak, even in regards to the McDonald era. Mike McD sounds, as always, incredible, but the production is very glossy, and musically it's the fartherst departure from anything resembling a Doobie Brother record.
