Odelay – BeckView More By Beck Our ReviewWith help from the weird dog on the cover and (more importantly) the production duo the Dust Brothers, Beck created his most successful, fun, and lively album to date with 1996's Odelay. Here the disparate elements that fuel Beck's music--blues, Latin jazz, folk, funk, and rap--collide with glorious results. Instead of the lo-fi quirks found on Mellow Gold you get a fuller sound that can't help but force you to turn up the stereo. "Devil's Haircut" and "The New Pollution" channel fierce hip-hop energy into what are essentially party songs. Album closer "Ramshackle" is anything but' it's one of Beck's finest stabs at a traditional folk song, complete with retro-sitar touches.. Customer ReviewsA turning point in Music (5 stars)Over the years, there have been many attempts to fuse many music genres. A couple names that pop into mind are Tom Waits and Ween. Few were as sucessful as Beck. Odelay was a strong follow up to a couple smaller scale released albums, including Mellow Gold which yielded his first hit "Loser". This album allows Beck to enter the studio with a vision and take guidance from one of the smartest production teams of the current day, Optimal Sweetness. (5 stars) 9 years ago, my brother and i purchased the record. Since then, we both have been listening to our own cd versions. This is probably the greatest album ever created. Since it has been reviewed plenty of times already, i would like to take this chance to give appreciation to the song "Jack-Ass." This song is extremely underrated and unnoticed. Although it is primarily two chords the whole time, it is my favorite song ever written by Best Beck album (5 stars) Once i heard Devils Haircut I knew this was going to be a very special album. The mix of the slow acoustic song of Ramshackle to the sweet hip hop beat of Where Its At and High 5 (Rock the Catskills) and the heavy songs like Minus and Novacane. Odelay is a album that is one for the ages. BiographyBorn: July 08, 1970 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Alternative Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Initially pegged as something as a voice of a generation when “Loser” turned into a smash crossover success, Beck did wind up crystallizing much of the post-modern ruckus of the ‘90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manners of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash-rock, pop, soul, lounge music…pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate, blurring boundaries and encapsulating how...
