Number 1's – James BrownView More By James Brown Our ReviewJames Brown never enjoyed a number one pop hit in Billboard, though seventeen R&B chart-toppers bore his name. One that hit eighteen, “Doing It to Death,” was credited to Fred Wesley and the J.B.’s, while “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” peaked at number two in Billboard, and at number one in the rival Cashbox. Brown’s entry in the Number 1's series pays tribute to all these happy occasions by collecting the radio-friendly short versions of discs spanning 1958 (the heavenly vocal-group ballad “Try Me”) to 1974 (variations on the funk “My Thang,” “The Payback” and “Papa Don’t Take No Mess”). All these, of course, have much to show anyone wants to understand James Brown, his music and how it sounded on the airwaves of its time. Though no longer with us, he’s not about to stop teaching us now.. Customer ReviewsAwful, sorry to say. (1 star)iTunes, why? This is bonk. All of these versions are single versions, surely people who buy james brown want the entire version of each sog, this is silliness at its worse. Superbad parts 1&2 single version clocks in at a total time of 5 minutes? GAWD! It make me sick to see these awful single versions. That's my opinion. I know it's not iTunes fault, they did not put the collection together, it is Universal Records fault, looks to "Man Made The Train!" (5 stars) .."To Carry The Heavy Load!"..And what a "Heavy Load" Mr. James Brown carried all those years! "Soul Brother #1"; "The Godfather Of Funk!" & "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business!" (It really brought a tear to our eyes at this year's Grammy Awards; when that one lone spotlight shone down on The Man's cape; truly a "nice touch!") All of "The Big Ones" are on board RIP James (5 stars) A great bargain at 10 bucks, your getting tons of great music from a great performer. R.I.P. James Brown BiographyBorn: May 03, 1933 in Barnwell, SCGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s "Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" — those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other African-American musicians were so influential over the course of popular music. And no other musician, pop or...
