Mr. Happy Go Lucky (Remastered) – John MellencampView More By John Mellencamp Our ReviewAfter surviving a massive heart attack, John Mellencamp confronted life, death and other serious matters on 1996’s Mr. Happy Go Lucky. In the process, he retooled his studio approach with production input from dance-pop wizard Junior Vasquez. Replacing the acoustic folk touches of earlier albums are sultry, hard-pulsing grooves, bringing an urban sophistication to Mellencamp’s brand of heartland rock. Tracks like “Mr. Bellows,” “Circling Around the Moon” and “Jerry” have an ominous urgency about them, while “This May Not Be the End of the World” has a spacey, almost psychedelic feel. There are sunnier moments as well, such as the playfully sexy “Key West Intermezzo (I Saw Her First”) and the tropically-inflected “Just Another Day.” Mellencamp’s most fervent testimonial comes in “Life Is Hard,” a clear-eyed look at mortality set to a slinky, body-grabbing track. If its title seems a bit ironic, it is true that the album finds a new joy in fresh sounds, even as it digs into heavy lyric topics. Mr. Happy Go Lucky adds a bolder rhythmic focus to Mellencamp’s music.. Customer ReviewsOne of the best (5 stars)Mr Happy Go Lucky is one of Mellencamp's best. I can't begin to guess how many times I've played just the first two tracks -- Overture and Jerry -- and got the same rush of excitement each time. It's a great, fantastic collection of songs put together with intelligence and feeling. There aren't many modern artists who have as much heart and soul as John Mellencamp, add in his song writing talent and his heartland authority questioning coo FANTASTIC!! (5 stars) always one of my personal faves, this album exceeds everything he did previously, except for maybe 'BIG DADDY' and is only closely followed by the 'JOHN MELLENCAMP', album from 1998. although he has released some stellar albums, since. this is one that you cant get out of your head once you let it take you over. buiy it!! An amazing album. (4 stars) Truly an amazing effort by Mellencamp. He blends so much of his folky roots with an almost cajun flare. Great tunes, top to bottom. Favorites include: Jerry, Just Another Day, The Full Catastrophe...heck, who am I kidding, I like them all. It's really one of those rare albums that every song has merit. I thought it was daring. BiographyBorn: October 07, 1951 in Seymour, INGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late '70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed, his music became more distinctive, developing into a Stonesy blend of hard rock and folk-rock. His musical development coincided with his growth in popularity — by the time "Hurts So Good"...
