Lovesexy – Prince
View More By Prince Our Review1988’s Lovesexy finds Prince struggling on the verge of a major creative crisis. After the carefully plotted commercial coup of Purple Reign Prince churned out a string of wildly ambitious and often dizzyingly eclectic albums that might have alienated his hard won mainstream fan base with their musical eccentricity and lyrical scandal-baiting had they not been so compellingly listenable. Yet in the wake of the epic Sign ‘o’ the Times, Prince seemed, for the first time in his career, uncertain of his creative direction, and after scrapping the uncharacteristically gloomy Black Album he quickly cobbled together Lovesexy, a succinct and accessible album that hearkened back to the mercurial brilliance of quick and dirty early efforts like Dirty Mind, while simultaneously serving as a brilliant summation of his career to date. Lovesexy draws on the innovations of Prince’s preceding albums, updating the electro-psychedelia of Around the World in a Day on the hook-laden “Alphabet Street”, successfully revisiting the crowd pleasing balladry of When Doves Cry on the ethereal “When 2 R In Love” and dabbling in the ambitious soundscapes of Sign ‘o’ the Times on the epic title track. The end result is a tight and undeniably accomplished album that ranks amongst Prince’s finest accomplishments.. Customer ReviewsOne giant track. Swell. (3 stars)I bought this CD the day it was released and the "one track" thing ticked me off then. It still ticks me off now. I understand that the "vision" of the album is to have it listened to in one sitting. This "vision" doesn't correlate with the "reality" that people simply don't do that any more - if they ever did. That said, there's some great music on here, and that's what the three stars represent. It Have you had your plus sign today? (5 stars) I believe this to be one of Prince's best albums, but then again, I loved Parade. Eye No, Love Sexy, I Wish You Heaven and Positivity are genius. Yes, it was tracked as one track upon it's initial release, however, the European pressings are indexed into 9 tracks. Contrary to popular belief, the tracked version is not rare. Buy both versions. Ultimately it's the music that matters most, and this is a trip you can afford to take twice. Visionary Music From The Best (5 stars) There's a reason Prince fans refer to him as "The Man." No one can touch him. Ask any musician. Even those that don't like his music will admit he's a master. This album is what happens when a master focuses his energies. Incredible. This gets 5 even though it's still one track. I dig the vision, and try to honor it whenever possible by listening to the whole thing at once. Still, the Chemical Brothers did the one-song th BiographyBorn: June 07, 1958 in Minneapolis, MNGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic...
