Late Night Tales: MGMT – MGMTView More By MGMT Our ReviewAs if we needed another reason to love MGMT, the selections it chose for its Late Night Tales mix are pure nuggets of record-collection gold. For the uninitiated, Late Night Tales is a regularly released compilation series that asks selected artists to come up with a late-night mix from their own music collection. MGMT’s mix not only plays with a soothing after-hours vibe; it’s like a portal into the band’s collective core of influences. It starts with Disco Inferno’s sleepy “Can’t See Through It” before dropping a pre–Jefferson Airplane gem with The Great Society’s psychedelic serenade “Love You Girl.” Following this up is the sultry Suicide cut “Cheree,” which is like the “Louie Louie” of drone rock. Add The Velvet Underground’s half-lidded “Ocean” and Spacemen 3’s “Lord Can You Hear Me,” and you have an ideal collection of lullabies for the Beatle-boot and bowlcut crowd. Of course MGMT has to throw in its own “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything,” because if you can’t dig your own songs, what are you doing it for?. Customer ReviewsAre you a hipster? (5 stars)If you answered "What's a hipster?", than this compilation is not for you. If you answered "No.", then this compilation is for you. I like the concept (5 stars) I like the idea of MGMT using their popularity to bring some new bands into the fold. And not just new bands, but really nice sounding bands. I didn't hear of any of the other bands on the album before but I gotta say that I really like them. For MGMT to vouch for all these guys it makes sense that they must meet their high musical standards which I suspect that they do. I really like this album. And as for the album title it fits p Super Duper! (5 stars) MGMT has opened my eyes to other music before with their covers and their influences told in interviews, but this is GREAT! Love Spacemen 3 and The Chills, also really digging Felt. Just wish the MGMT song wasn't album only.... BiographyFormed: 2002 in Brooklyn, NYGenre: Alternative Years Active: '00s, '10s Finding an unlikely middle point between Suicide's hostile, proto-electro punk art noise and the sardonic, pop-friendly sound of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started as electroclash musical terrorists but quickly grew into an eclectic, brainy pop group with psychedelic overtones. MGMT first formed in 2002, during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden's freshman year as art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. The band was initially known as the Management, and its shows consisted mostly...
