Katy Lied – Steely DanView More By Steely Dan Our ReviewSteely Dan produced some of some of the most literate pop records of the '70s. Named after a sex toy from the William Burroughs junkie novel Naked Lunch, Steely Dan had evolved from a bona fide group to, at the time of Katy Lied's 1975 release, a collection of studio hot shots, with Walter Becker and Don Fagen writing, producing, and singing all vocals. Steely Dan had stopped touring, so this dynamic duo spent thousands of studio hours crafting their pop masterpieces. Although Katy Lied isn't as hit-laden as their three prior albums. "Black Friday" was the AM hit from the album, and there are a number of other great tracks that found a home on FM Album radio, including the catchy "Bad Sneakers" and the hip but oblique "Doctor Wu.". Customer ReviewsBest Steely Dan Album (5 stars)Katy Lied is the best Steely Dan album in my opinion. The album is very jazzy and includes my two favorite Steely Dan songs: 'Doctor Wu', and the highly underrated 'Your Gold Teeth II'. I don't know why no one seems to like 'Your Gold Teeth II' because it has amazing piano (like many other tracks on this album) and a great guitar solo with about 1:14 remaining in the song. If you like any Steely Dan, or jazz, you should buy this album. ( Cool Steely Dan (4 stars) This album was introduced to me a while ago. I have been listening to it when ever I could. All of these songs are very good. Some of the best songs are: Black Friday, Bad Sneekers, Daddy don't live in that new york city no more, Docter wu, and Everyone's gone to the movies. I stongly recomend this album and would listen to it (the entire album) twice over. Go Steely Dan. Easy to Overlook, But you shouldn't (5 stars) Just some great tunes with plenty of foreshadowing to what they are destined to become. Black Friday, Bad Sneakers are great and Doctor Wu is hard to forget. Chained Lightning has great chords and most of these songs require quite a few plays to get the subversive lyrics. There are more obvious places to start with the Dan, but this is one of those albums you must have to complete your Steely Dan collection. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock — with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan — preferring jazz, traditional...
