When her debut album was released in September of 1982, Janet Jackson's ambition was to become an actress, not a musician. Still, she was determined to make her debut on her own merits, and she refused the participation of her more famous siblings. Janet Jackson is a well-executed, if slightly generic, piece of early-‘80s boogie. The first three songs were written by the chart-topping R&B duo Rene & Angela. These songs, particularly “Say You Do” and “Young Love,” are snappy dance tunes, closely related to what Janet’s brother Michael was pursuing during the same period. Janet’s voice hasn’t completely developed into her trademark coo — strangely, her voice here is slightly deeper than it would become in the years to follow. On the ballads —“Love and My Best Friend” and “Forever Yours”— she sounds slightly unsure, but there is no mistaking her charisma. “Don’t Mess Up This Good Thing” and “Come Give Your Love To Me” are delightful and sugary period pieces, but it’s clear even at this young age that Janet was destined for more.

Firstly, in order to have a true appreciation for this classic 80's cut you have to see Janet lip-synch to it on American Bandstand (I would love to own that on DVD hint-hint). I was surprised to see that iTunes now has Janet Jackson's debut album. She sounds very good for sixteen. I like "Don't Mess Up This Good Thing" and "Young Love" which has a very upbeat melody. "You'll Never Find A Love Like Mine" is also a good song and so is "Forever Yours." I really like "Love and My Best Friend" which is a very sweet song.
