View More By Journey Our ReviewJourney had been chugging along as a jazz-inflected rock ensemble for a few years before signing up diminutive dynamo Steve Perry as lead singer. Infinity (1978) was the first release with Perry on board, a template for later albums to follow. As before, the musicianship on the album is impeccable — Neal Schon’s overdrive guitar leads and Gregg Rolie’s gleaming keyboard lines are nothing less than high-class throughout. Still, it’s evident that without Perry’s yearning vocals, the album would be more of an exercise in technical excellence than a wide-appeal project. With a delicacy suggesting Sam Cooke at times, he turns ballads like “Patiently” and “Winds Of March” into mini-operas of rock romance. He can ride the band’s strutting groove on “Can Do” and rise to churning heights convincingly as well on “Wheel In The Sky.” No one ever accused this band of playing for the critics — tracks like “Lights” are radio-ready creations designed to melt hearts en masse. Judged on its own terms, though, Infinity is an unassailable work that inspired a host of imitators and set Perry on the royal road to stardom.. Customer ReviewsOnly the Beggining! (5 stars)From the opening notes of "Lights" to the haunting final cut "Opened the Door" this is truly one of Journey's finest records. It was the summer of 1978 in Chicago and great music was everywhere! "Lights", "Wheel In the Sky" and the one two punch of "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime" made this a summer never to forget. It was the first time the amazing voice of Steve Perry hit the a Fantastic album! (5 stars) It was fabulous then and it is fabulous now. This is great from start to finish. Most people only know the radio hits, but on this album, all of the tracks are good - Winds of March is my favorite but really most of these are amazing songs - Steve Perry never sounded better. There is no better Journey album than this one! INFINITY WILL GO ON FOREVER (5 stars) Personally I feel this is one of the GREATEST albums of all times, right there with Dark Side Of the Moon. This album launched Journey into being one of the greatest bands of the late 70's. My absolute favorite, Winds of March is awesome. Steve Perry made this band Launch. I owned all of Journeys works over the years, this was the BEST one hands down, without question.
