In Time – The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 (Special Edition) – R.E.M.View More By R.E.M. Our ReviewR.E.M.’s association with Warner Bros. Records exemplifies the reasons the label was long regarded as a jewel in the rock world. The band was left to create adventurous work that moved against trends, ultimately convincing audiences to go their way with a series of multiplatinum sellers. In Time surveys 15 years in the group’s life, bringing together moments crystalline (“Losing My Religion,” whose gift of an old Southern idiom to wider consciousness retains its vitality), grinding (“What’s the Frequency Kenneth,” from the brilliant sonic left-turn Monster) and loopily affirmative (“Stand”). Sequenced with a revelatory flair (as when the empathetic anthem “Everybody Hurts” is followed by Reveal’s gorgeous Pet Sounds knockoff “At My Most Beautiful”), these are often defining slices of pop that were welcomed with surprise and love. Two previously unheard tracks complete the set.. Customer ReviewsA nice starting place (4 stars)Greatest hit albums are not meant for fans of the band. As a huge R.E.M. fan, I could take the snobby route like most people and complain about what is not on here. But I already own all the albums. So I can offer some advice to anyone who wants to get into this band. Anywhere is a great place to start. This is a wonderful collection for those who are just familiar with Losing My Religion, Stand and Everybody Hurts. If you like what you hear Note: "1988-2003" (4 stars) Don't complain about not including earlier songs if it specifically says that it doesn't include them. If you want those, try looking at 'And I Feel Fine... The Best Of The I.R.S. Years, 1982-1987'. Diehards should not miss out (4 stars) How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? You do your best and create an exceptional album. 18 songs of some (not all) of the hits of R.E.M. 16 of the songs are from prior releases and two new songs, the fast beat of Bad Day and the slow monolithic Animal reminiscent of Shiny, Happy People. BiographyFormed: 1980 in Athens, GAGenre: Rock Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
