Gratitude – Earth, Wind & FireView More By Earth, Wind & Fire Our ReviewBy the mid-‘70s, Earth, Wind & Fire had a lot to be grateful for: big radio hits, solid artistic achievements, a massive concert following. Gratitude (1975) is an appropriately-titled live (mostly) set by a band that catches the R&B/pop ensemble at the height of their powers, blazing through unstoppable funk jams and luxuriating in velvet-smooth soul balladry. With Maurice Starr at the helm, EW&F comes across as a well-drilled but supple unit, providing plenty of solo space without losing the fundamental groove. Andrew Woolfolk’s incendiary sax playing and Verdine White’s pumping bass work stand out, and most of all, Phillip Bailey’s elegant falsetto vocals shine through, particularly on ballads like “Devotion” and “Reasons.” On exhilarating takes of “Yearnin’ Learnin’” and “Sun Goddess,” the band plays with a ferocious energy that commands the body to move. Rounding out the album are studio tracks like the inspirational “Sing A Song.” Gratitude affirms EW&F’s stature as one of the best live acts of the ‘70s.. Customer Reviewsgratitude (5 stars)Anyone listening to this album should have "Gratitude" for the privelige to listen to such an important album from giants like Earth Wind & Fire. Not only one of their most significant albums, but one of the most significant albums of the last 25 years. A must have for anyone who wants to know where all of these new groups have stolen their sound and style from. If you don't own this album, your collection is severely lacking. Not So Old, Old School (5 stars) ...is truly a gratuitous gift of live recordings from an EW&F concert tour that I was blessed to attend. This concert is one of the cingularly most clear events of my youth that I can honestly say helped me to define myself. Unlike the commercial crap comming across the airwaves today, the music included in this compilation forces me to feel good; downright happy about myself and everyone around me. This is music that makes me want to Best Live Album, Best Album, and Best True "Group"!! (5 stars) At the risk of sounding as if I'm just one more voice in the choir, not that that would be so bad when "singing" the praises of SUCH an important piece of art, I'm here to echo the other four reviewers so far and their universal praise of the incredible Earth, Wind, and Fire and this particular album. I bought it in vinly in the 70’s, bought it again on CD in the 90’s, and now it’s STILL one of the most played set of songs o BiographyFormed: 1969 in Chicago, ILGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his...
