God & Guns – Lynyrd SkynyrdView More By Lynyrd Skynyrd Our ReviewGary Rossington may be the only original member left — most of the band has met with tragedy — and singer Johnny Van Zant may never equal his older brother Ronnie’s empathetic Southern drawl, but with ex-Blackfoot guitarist Rickey Medlocke aboard, there are still plenty of chances to build on the legacy. A few tunes here strike a definite nerve. “Southern Ways” chimes with a lick reminiscent of “Sweet Home Alabama” but slowed by age. “Unwrite That Song” beats with a country song’s heart. “Floyd” rattles with a nasty hook and guest vocals from Rob Zombie. The title track uses a subtler acoustic touch. “Skynyrd Nation” huffs and puffs with the bravado one might expect from an intended anthem (Van Zant even calls for everyone to “put your hands in the air” with a sly, demented laugh). The production, however, obscures some of the better moments. “Still Unbroken” and “Simple Life” are solid tunes that use a hard- rock band’s attack and a wall of sound where you need to listen closer to hear the intricacies that have always made Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the greats.. Customer Reviewslove it!! (5 stars)I grew up listening to Skynard because my parents were Skynard fans. Their music has always been amazing and this album is no different. It doesnt sound like the classic skynard but is definately nothing short of amazing! get your heads on straight. (5 stars) SELLOUTS??? GUNS ARE DEATH???? come one people this is one of the best albums skynyrd has made. it really speaks the mind of true Americans and is really representitive of us in this charged climate. God bless a band willing to go against the "mainstream" and really show the true America. And the sound is different but comon this is 2009 not 1974 and like it was said previoously only ONE original band member is still alive. use y Another Winner in my book (5 stars) This album is simply amazing, many people have a nasty habit of condemning new skynyrd because they only have one original member left and dont seem to sound as though they did in the 1970s. I say who cares! This is valid work, ranking near the top along with Vicious Cycle of my favorite Skynyrd Albums, both new and old. You can hear the pain and pure force in some of these songs, their beyond describing. Alot heavier than we're used to when BiographyFormed: 1965 in Jacksonville, FLGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band — they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd's redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of...
